CIG Shares Insights on the Role of Leaders in Building Strong Nations at Elevate Africa Convening
October 30, 2025

GABORONE (Botswana), 30 October 2025 – At the 2025 Elevate Africa Convening, Mr. Wu Wei Neng, Chief Executive Officer of the Chandler Institute of Governance (CIG), shared that capabilities lie at the heart of government performance, and that leaders have a role in stewarding their national story to build strong nations. Elevate Africa is a non-profit institution dedicated to reshaping the narrative of the African continent by empowering a new generation of leaders for shared African issues, and enhancing collaboration within and beyond the continent to drive socio-economic advancement and narrative transformation.
In his plenary speech on “Building High Performance Governments: The Role of Leaders in Stewarding National Story", Mr. Wu emphasised that high performance is not a matter of ideology or political structure, but instead about an intentional focus on systems, capabilities, and outcomes. Drawing on examples from Singapore and Tanzania, he illustrated how capable leadership, effective institutions, and a strong national narrative together shape national unity and enduring progress.

The session brought together current and former Heads of State, senior government leaders, and other high-level representatives from international organisations and the wider community from across Africa, to exchange ideas on governance, trade, and identity into a unified, future-facing vision for the continent.
CIG was grateful for the opportunity to contribute to the 2025 Elevate Africa convening, and we extend our appreciation to Elevate Africa’s co-founders, His Royal Majesty, the 21st Olu of Warri Kingdom, Ogiame Atuwatse III CFR, and Her Royal Majesty, Queen Consort of the Warri Kingdom, Olori Atuwatse III, for their vision and partnership. We look forward to working with leaders and partners like Elevate Africa to build high performance governments and strong nations across Africa.
